A drying shed at the edge of the forest

Misiones, in the far northeast of Argentina: red earth, the Atlantic forest on every side, and yerba mate in rows between the trees.

Lucía Kowal inherits her grandmother Wanda’s drying shed, a small crew who knew Wanda for decades, and a notebook that doesn’t tell her everything.

Dawn mist over the yerbal and Wanda’s house on stilts, the drying shed beside it.

From the leaf to the shelf

  1. Pickers among the yerba rows under the trees, bundles of leaf on the platform by the shed.

    Grow

Yerba grows in rows on the red earth, under the trees you keep for shade. In the harvest season the pickers cut it by hand.

  2. The shed at noon: the flash-firing drum on its brick firebed, the arch dryer and the coarse mill.

    Process

Fire the leaf in the drum, dry it over wood smoke, mill it and let it rest. Then grind your own blends and pack them under your brand.

  3. The order board: order slips from different buyers pinned on kraft paper, with their terms.

    Sell

Every buyer means something different by good. Take the orders you can meet, and get the bags on the truck in time.

  4. The restored casona with its white pillars and tile roof, visitors at the door and their van on the red road.

    Run the place

A crew with names and shifts, storms that stop the picking, land to buy, and an old estancia to bring back.
